Accurate diagnosis and treatment of Vibrio vulnificus infection: a retrospective study of 12 cases BJID

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vibrio vulnificus causes an infectious disease that has extremely poor convalescence and leads to necrotic fasciitis. In this study, we sought to define the characteristic epidemiology of V. vulnificus infection and clarify its diagnosis at the global level. METHODS: Over a period of 10 years, we investigated the appearance of symptoms, underlying conditions, treatment, and mortality in 12 patients (eight men, four women; >50 years old; average age, 66 years,) infected with V. vulnificus. Bactéries pathogènes indigènes des eaux estuariennes: cas des vibrios. Revue bibliographique ArchiMer

De nombreuses bactéries, peuplant habituellement les zones estuariennes, se révèlent être de plus en plus fréquemment des agents de maladies dont les vecteurs principaux sont les coquillages et leur consommation par l'homme. Le présent travail synthétise l'état des connaissances sur les vibrios, en particulier Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus et Vibrio vulnificus, bactéries pour lesquelles il existe une  abondante littérature. L'écologie, le pouvoir pathogène et les milieux de culture les plus couramment utilisés en vue de leur détection sont présentés. Enfin, leur interaction avec les mollusques bivalves, leur survie dans ceux-ci et le problème de l'épuration conséquente de ces derniers sont abordés.

Detection of cytotoxin-hemolysin mRNA in nonculturable populations of environmental and clinical Vibrio vulnificus strains in artificial seawater ArchiMer

The objective of this study was to develop a molecular detection method that better estimates the potential risk associated with the presence of Vibrio vulnificus. For that purpose, we applied seminested reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) to viable but nonculturable (VBNC) populations of V. vulnificus and targeted the cytotoxin-hemolysin virulence gene vvhA. Three strains, two environmental, IF Vv10 and IF Vv18, and one clinical, C7184, were used in this study. Artificial seawater, inoculated with mid-log-phase cells, was maintained at 4degreesC. The presence of Vibrio bacteria in raw shellfish poses a significant health hazard to the consuming public. These human pathogens are natural, seasonal components of the microbial flora of shellfish which can result in primary septicemic or diarrheal fatal infections. Existing shellfish depuration neither targets nor eliminates the Vibrio bacteria. For this reason, additional purification processes are necessary. Of the several bacterial diseases which may result from consumption of shellfish, those caused by marine bacteria of the genus Vibrio are the most abundant. In the United States, up to 10,000 non-fatal cases per year are estimated to be caused by the various members of this genus. More than 95% of all deaths in the United States which result from seafood consumption are caused by a single bacterium, Vibrio vulnificus. The bacterium is a normal inhabitant of estuarine waters, and occurs naturally in especially high numbers in molluscan shellfish. Oyster Demand Adjustments to Counter-Information and Source Treatments in Response to Vibrio vulnificus AgEcon

A web-based contingent behavior analysis was developed to quantify the effect of both negative and positive information treatments and post harvest processes on demand for oysters. Results from a panel model indicate that consumers of raw and cooked oysters behave differently after news of an oyster-related human mortality. While cooked oyster consumers take precautionary measures against risk, raw oyster consumers exhibit optimistic bias and increase their consumption level. Further, by varying the source of a counter-information treatment, we find that source credibility impacts behavior. Real-Time PCR optimization to identify environmental Vibrio spp. strains ArchiMer

Aims: To identify Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio alginolyticus using standardized DNA extraction method and real-time PCR assays, among a large number of bacterial strains isolated from marine environment. Methods and Results: Methods for DNA extraction and real-time PCR were standardized to identify a large number of Vibrio spp. strains isolated through regular collection campaigns of environmental samples. Three real-time PCR assays were developed from a multiplex PCR, targeting V. vulnificus, V. cholerae and V. alginolyticus on the dnaJ gene. Vibrio vulnificus infection in São Paulo, Brazil: case report and literature review BJID

Non cholera Vibrio may cause conjunctivitis, wound infection, gastroenteritis and serious sepsis. Transmission to men is through contact with skin, mucosa or wounds exposed to marine water, and consumption of certain barely cooked or raw seafood, more frequently in the summer. This is one of the first cases of severe infection related to Vibrio vulnificus described in Brazil. The patient was an old man, who ingested seafood in Guarujá, a seashore city near São Paulo, 3 days before hospitalization. He was admitted to the emergency room in an ill state with septic shock.
